MOUNT BAKER FOUNDATION BEGAN ITS JOURNEY AS A PRIVATE FOUNDATION IN 2017
The sale of the Mount Baker Kidney Center created opportunities to advance a new vision for health in Whatcom County. Individuals, families, neighborhoods, and communities become stronger, healthier, and more compassionate, generation after generation.
OUR MISSION
TO IDENTIFY AND FUND CATALYTIC, TRANSFORMATIVE INITIATIVES THAT RESULT IN SUSTAINABLE CHANGE.
OUR VISION
INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, NEIGHBORHOODS, AND COMMUNITIES ARE BECOMING STRONGER, HEALTHIER, AND MORE COMPASSIONATE, GENERATION AFTER GENERATION.
OUR GUIDING WISDOMS
WE BELIEVE THAT COMMUNITIES KNOW WHAT THEY NEED TO THRIVE.
-
Those closest to the challenges are also closest to the solutions. Our grantmaking and partnerships start with relationship building and trust- trust in the lived experience, expertise, and leadership of those community members most impacted by health inequities.
-
We prioritize the leadership, voices, and wisdom of those who live the realities of inequity every day. Their voices guide our path forward.
-
We challenge the mindset of scarcity that too often limits what communities can imagine. We believe there is enough resources, enough creativity, and enough power for everyone to thrive. Our funding and partnerships seek to expand what’s possible, not restrict it.
-
We recognize that racism is a root cause of inequity. We commit to the ongoing personal, organizational, and systemic work required to dismantle it.
-
We honor the original stewards of this land and affirm their inherent rights to self-determination and cultural continuance. We seek to build relationships grounded in respect, accountability, and solidarity with Native communities. We also believe in Indigenous ways of knowing, and honor culturally-affirming work.
-
We aim to spark change that ripples outward. By investing in bold ideas and nurturing connections across communities, we hope to serve as a catalyst for lasting transformation and collective healing.
Our History
Our Future
Our strategic plan laid out the following three work areas:
Resource Reallocation
We direct funding toward community organizations working on the root causes of inequity, ensuring they have what they need to advocate, organize, and create long-term change. Read more about our grants here.
Movement Building & Advocacy
We help funders and community partners work together through shared values, justice, and liberation-based frameworks, and coordinated regional investment towards our goals of strengthening collective action for systems change.
Community Capacity Building
We create and support spaces where community members, nonprofits, and providers can connect, collaborate, and lead in order to build stronger networks, civic engagement, and community power.
